It seems fairly obvious that the debate over the Park51 community center has morphed into something far larger. It has transformed into an unacknowledged national referendum on the place of Islam within American society. Tensions are rising, and there have been a number of frightening incidents across the country aimed at, by all accounts, peaceful [...]
its first of all interesting that the WTC under-basement area contained the wreckage of a fairly intact ship, but also which A. survived "the construction of manhattan"... but also B. survived "ground zero" with the flaming world trade center buildings coming down on top of it... all with a lucky coin still hidden within the construction.

what lucky coin indeed!
And the recent discovery of a coin, in a very special place, means they're going to have to call a coin specialist. Sara Rivers-Cofield, another curator, says the coin placement is an important clue.

"There's not much information left on it, but because of its position, it tells us about the superstitions of people, it tells us about how they lived and what they believed and what they wanted there, and that's what archaeology's really about," she says.

The coin was found between the keel and the stern post. Rivers-Cofield says it's a tradition, dating back to the ancient Greeks, to place a coin there during construction to bring good luck to the ship.

"Pagans" and the Politics of Victimhood

Why is it that I see a constant and continual stream of "pagan" victimhood in many news articles, especially those here?

It makes the "pagan"...

Why is it that I see a constant and continual stream of "pagan" victimhood in many news articles, especially those here?

It makes the "pagan" movement seem like it is built upon the backs of sissies. People who take every imaginable slight over their beliefs as proof of their persecution. Those who take the "burning times" hysteria of teenage Wiccan books and makes it into a modern political inquisition.

The simple fact is: If you live in the first world, you have nothing to fear from religious persecution in any serious sense. At most, you're going to get dirty looks, and frankly dirty looks are about as violent as smelling dogpoop in the summer. Plus, it's not like you're a visible minority. I assume that none of you have green skin and warts. If you do, I would suggest a good plastic surgeon.

A slavish, weak-willed mindset of taking "offense" at everything also seems excessively -not- pagan-. Paganism historically has -few- ties with the sort of effete nonsense. I seem to recall that the Gauls would fight naked as they had not a bit of fear of death due to Druidic metempsychosis doctrines.

To note: I like to consider myself romantically as a non-specific traditional pagan, so consider this an internal critique. I, for one, don't feel victimized. It is like everyone is a damn legislating member of the ACLU in the pagan group.

http://www.mandaba.la/brazilian-indi...children-alive

Video tape evidence has emerged that Brazilian natives persist in burying alive young handicapped children. Horrifyingly, this video evidence (which is to be found in the link above) shows the murder in action.

Leftist forces in the government are supportive of permitting the practice to go on, on the account of cultural toleration. In contrast, a group has emerged to expose and prohibit the practice. According to them, Google has begun to censor their videos posted on the internet. Admittedly, this doesn't necessarily have to be political, as posting a video of a child being murdered (even if it is meant to expose such evils) is fairly graphic.

Still, the simple fact that this practice is persisting horrifyingly into the modern world. The absurd cruelty of the savage once again shatters the Utopic pipedream of pie-in-the-sky anthropologists.
