Recession and the price of vegetables
They say we are not in a recession yet. They say that we are close though, but heh, has anyone priced produce lately? Even wal*mart’s synthetic veggies are above the average person’s budget.
Amanda hit that rabbit a while back and Cyndi and I headed out to get some greens for it. We almost didn’t get anything due to the high prices, yeah, yeah, it would have just been two bucks, but by the gods, just 6 months ago that $2 could have likely gotten us three times the amount of food (from
The Pig). We ended up getting a prefab bag of lettuce/greens for around a buck and a half…
We can our own veggies that we get from the local market (Amish/Organic) or from our own garden… but we happened to notice that even a can of corn is over a buck now depending on the brand, and soup, by the gods, a decent can of soup is $2.
Bread is twice what I recall paying for it just a few years ago as well, twice… TWICE! And milk, by the gods, milk is only cheap if you are an infant
These observances remind me of the stories I’ve heard of old people eating cat food to survive. And cat food is something I do not want to eat….
I am grateful now, more then ever, that I have moved out of the big city to live a simple life here with Cyndi. In the city there was really no option for a garden. There was no option for living off the land, there was no option for eating unprocessed food… but had times gotten much harder I may have been eating that cat food to make it through the next day.
Why? Lower high-end catfood is pretty much the same thing as Dintemore Beef stew, but it costs a buck, rather then the $2.50 a can of stew would set me back. And as sad as it is, the price of canned stew is cheaper then the costs of buying the ingredients to make it from scratch… besides, heh, cat food and processed stew both smell the same, lol.
Where does that leave me? Well, it leaves me appreciating that 85x60 foot garden out back just full of veggies. It leaves me with a taste for fresh eggs, and rooster meat. It leaves me with the money saved from not needing to waste gas on the next trip to the grocery store.
We still need to get a few staples, like flour, sugar, and Mountain Dew (lol) and that is OK… but currently, this week alone, we have saved well over half of our food costs by eating deer meat and garden fresh peas...
If you have a garden, tend it well. If you do not have a garden, then I urge you to think about buying a shovel, a hoe, and a few bags of seeds. By fall, you will be glad you did!
